Half the Sky (Asia) Ltd. began its happy existence in Hong Kong in 2007 with a heartwarming "housewarming" party courtesy of the HK office of State Street Bank. In the years that followed, hundreds (perhaps thousands) of Hong Kong residents have proven that there is no lack of loving concern for the Mainland's orphaned children from neighbors South of the Border.
We held our first Annual Hong Kong Gala in 2008 and each event - whether in hotel ballroom, Market Hall, or even the Happy Valley Race Track!) has been a smashing success. No one who saw them will soon forget the Singing Waiters!
Half the Sky programs have benefited from the generous support of both businesses and individuals. Kudos to friends too numerous to list completely.
Enjoy some of our many clips above and below, read about a few of our many intrepid Hong Kong heroes:
In the fall of 2011, three running teams from Capital Group Hong Kong swept across the hills of Hong Kong in the 100km MacLehose relay for Half the Sky. The MacLehose Trail is the longest in Hong Kong. It runs for 100 km along the mountainous New Territories. The relay race was an amazing effort, lasting just under 16 hours, to benefit the Beihai and Sanya Social Welfare Institutions.
The run began at 4:48 AM as the first member of Team 1 set off under a canopy of stars around High Island Reservoir and deep into the Sai Kung Country Park. By 8.00 AM the sun was up and another team member had joined the race. Together they battled through the mid morning heat over Ma On Shan to stay close to their timing schedule. Exhausted and out of water, they finally got to the noodle shop on ShaTin pass road by 12.15—just 15 minutes behind their target.
That proved not to matter, however, as they handed over the Red Ribbon Baton - taken from the HTS logo! - to the second group of HKO associates and friends , Team 2, who were eagerly waiting. Off they sped up the trail and over the peaks of Kowloon. Two hours and 15 minutes later, having successfully navigated 7.3 kms. of climbs, inclines, steps and monkeys, they reached TaiPo Road where they handed the baton to the waiting member of Team 3. That fearless fellow ran off through more monkeys up into the Tai Mo Shan Country Park. Having reached Route Twisk at sunset, he donned his head torch and plunged into the forest for the final 2.5 hours to the finish, where he crossed the finish line at 8.31 pm to give Team HK a finish time of 15 hours and 43 minutes!
It takes all kinds of heros to make sure that China's orphans have a chance at a brighter future. Won't you become part of HTS Team Hong Kong? Learn how you can donate to Half the Sky (Asia) and/or volunteer your time to make our great Annual Gala even greater!
